Serving, protecting

- By MARK THOMAS

Every year, the Grahamstown SPCA assists over 5 000 animals from Grahamstown and the surrounding areas. We respond to any animals that are in need and provide a 24-hour service that operates 365 days a year. Did you know that we receive absolutely no funding from the government? We rely entirely on the generosity of the public and local businesses to keep us able to serve our community.

We have one inspector and one bakkie. Our geographical area goes up to Cradock, includes all of the Makana District, over to Patterson and out to Peddie.

We get an average of 30 calls a day and get called out to "urgent" acts of cruelty, road traffic accidents involving animals, animals trapped in snares and these in any form of distress or discomfort.

We deal with any injured and sick animals, including farm animals and wildlife. Stray animals, however are the responsibility of Makana Municipality (046 603 6072) and dead animal carcasses are the responsibility of Makana Environmental Health (046 603 6000).

Our objective is to serve and protect all animals, to uplift their welfare and to ensure that the protection they have under South African law is upheld and respected.

Our mission is to prevent cruelty and promote the welfare of all animals, while our vision is to end animal cruelty in South Africa and engender compassion for all animals.

We work tirelessly to protect animals from neglect and abuse and enforce the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 when deliberate cruelty takes place.

The lives of tens of thousands of animals are improved because of our passion, our intervention, and our commitment to bringring about long-term posositive change for all animals, farmed aninimals, wildlife, research animals, domestics and animals used in entertainment and sport.

On a daily basis we receive calls from people who expect us to help them for free.

We simply cannot afford to treat animals for free for people who have the means to pay, so we do ask for a nominal fee, bearing in mind that it costs us a lot more (inspector’s time, fuel, wear and tear on the vehicle, medications).

We make absolutely no money on adoptions as we believe in only charging for the animal’s neutering, vaccinations, identity tag and deworming. We appreciate donations when people do adopt as it has cost us money to keep that animal (food, cleaning their kennel uses water and expensive disinfectant).

Please help us to continue serving our community.

Summer Tip. Did you know a medium sized dog can drink between one and two litres of water a day? Please remember to leave plenty of water out for your dogs.

On a 29C day the inside of your car could reach 38C in 10 minutes and 48C in 30 minutes. Please do not leave pets in cars.
