Brumbies win Friendship

- By STEPHEN PENNEY

The Grahamstown Brumbies hosted the South Eastern District (SEDRU) Friendship Cup 10’s rugby tournament at the Oval on Saturday.

The event formed part of the 2016 Brumbies rugby 10s tournament and was originally organised for the top finishing teams in the Brumbies tournament, who would face the top sides from a similar Queens- town tournament.

Unfortunately, Queenstown withdrew days before the event and the Brumbies decided to invite other teams within the Sedru district, to face the Grahamstown teams.

Team Cellotape, which won the 2016 Brumbies 10’s rugby tournament, made it a double by winning the Sedru Friendship Cup, after beating neighbours Ghostown 17-0 in the final.

The travelling teams taking part in the tournament were Trying Stars (Alexandria), Rosebuds (Alicedale) and Kilpfontein. The Joza Kings, who participated in the Brumbies 2016 10s tournament, also took part.

“We know it was very short notice after the withdrawal of the Queenstown Teams and you sacrificed a lot to attend,” said Brumbies president, who also thanked the “four Grahamstown Brumbies teams Cello, Ghost Town United, Verries/Hooggenoeg and CPR.”

Flotman said the main objective of the tournament were to give players game time and use the event for fundraising and to give community rugby entertainment.

School pupil Cole Kirkwood and the oldest player on the day Steward Morris were the joint top try scorers with five tries each on the day.

Verries United claimed 3rd Place position after Currie Park forfeited the 3rd Vs 4th place play-off.

The Grahamstown Brumbies rugby teams will travel to Alexandria for a friendly against Trying Stars tomorrow.
