Grahamstow­n’s nightlife is so vibrant that it has been nicknamed G-Vegas. For real. When the sun goes down, Rhodes University students come out to unwind and catch up with friends. Grahamstow­n has a variety of social scenes, which means there is something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for drinks with friends in a relaxed environmen­t, or somewhere to dance the night away, it’s all here.

Below are clubs and bars that are popular, budget and student friendly.

- Has all the qualities of an uptown city lounge at Prime with its VIP areas, multiple dance floors and signature magnetic blue lighting which is enhanced by the club’s hip-hop and house music.

37 on New - A night at 37 on New is described as “a genuine multicultu­ral South African experience.” The fun vibe is created by the bonfire in the centre of the outdoor area, a well-stocked cocktail café, and a nightclub section.

- This is a town favourite. It’s considered a social hub with its wooden booths that create an easygoing atmosphere for mingling. The place is guaranteed to play all your favourite music, from current chart toppers to classic throwbacks.

- The Rat & Parrot is the apple in Grahamstow­n’s eye, frequented by students and older locals alike. The décor stays true to the place’s “pirateesqu­e” theme, with a wood-panelled downstairs area featuring a bar, and multiple

tables for a relaxed dining experience. The upstairs veranda offers a street view, and is a hotspot for dancing and mingling.

- Champs Action Bar is the spot to enjoy a few drinks and or a game of pool with friends. The well-priced booze, good food and great music make it another favourite among students and Grahamstow­n locals. They host weekly events like karaoke nights and live music performed by local bands.

- If you love punk-rock music, then SSS Sports Bar is the place for you. Here you’ll find all elements of an enjoyable bar like reasonably-priced food and drink. The joint also has a dance floor/mosh pit, which sets it apart from the rest of the bars in town.
