Rowers’ pride

- STAFF REPORTER

The St Andrew’s College 1st Eight were awarded gold and the Axel Ohlsson Memorial Trophy for winning the Buffalo Regatta over the weekend.

They progressed through the heats with the fastest time, but due to stormy weather, the final didn’t take place and places were allocated by heats’ times. The local boys were repeat winners in Selborne Sprints, took the Selborne Shield on the Friday and won the overall points trophy for schools at the Buffalo Regatta as well.

The 130th Buffalo Regatta and 58th Selborne Sprints was a good weekend for St Andrew’s rowers who dominated throughout all events. A feature of the weekend was the club being able to qualify two boats for the finals in many events.

In the U15 squad, Jason Thomas, Brendan Mouritzen and Richard Southern all progress to the A Final of the single skull, placing 1st, 2nd and 5th respectively. They qualified two Double Sculls to the A Final with Mouritzen/Thomas taking gold and Southern/Zahn silver. The A and B Quads both made the final, with the A crew taking gold and the B crew ending 5th.

In the Selborne Sprints (over 500m), Thomas and Mouritzen claimed gold and silver in the Sculls, and these two boys again took gold in the Double. The A Quad took gold and B Quad 5th, whilst the A Octuple won easily with the B Octuple placing 5th in the Final.

The U16 A Four made the A final to take 5th place. The Selborne Sprints event saw the A Four claiming 5th again, and then claim bronze in the A Eight event.

In the Open Squad Dane Van Duren and Mitch De Kock claimed 4th place in the 1st Pairs, Whilst Geir Wilson and Jake England came 4th in the 2nd Pairs event. The St Andrews College 2nd Eight won by a length to claim gold in their event.

In the Selborne Sprints on the Friday, the 1st Pairs event saw Torr and Holmes taking gold, with Thomas and Warneke claiming 5th. The 1st and 2nd coxed Four and 1st coxless Fours all claimed silver, whilst in the 2nd Eight St Andrew’s claimed gold.
