G2C in July

The annual Grahamstown to Sea (G2C) mountain bike race will take place on Sunday 9 July. Organisers announced the 2017 race date this week. The race once again falls on the last day of the National Arts festival. G2C starts at the warehouse of sponsors Pennypinchers in the Industrial Area and then sees cyclists make their way to Port Alfred along the Southwell Road, finishing at Rosehill Mall in Port Alfred, 58km later.

South African Shore Angling

Melissa du Randt, Grade 2 teaching assistant at Graeme College, recently took part in the Ladies’ Division Shore Angling Nationals in Struisbaai. The teams fished for three days. Anglers from Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, Border, Southern Cape, Boland, Western Province, West Coast, Northern Gauteng and Eastern Province took part.

At the end of the competition, the Eastern Province team finished in fourth position. Despite days of sweltering heat and windy conditions, Melissa finished 12th overall among the 49 anglers who took part. Selections were made for the two South African teams – the Gus (B) team and the Protea (A) team – based on the performance ranking over three years.

Melissa, currently ranked third, was selected for the Protea team for the second year in a row. The next International competition, against Namibia, will take place in December 2017.

National squash

The Bloem Open is one of three national squash tournaments used to determine the SA rankings in the various age groups.

Both Erin and Lisa-Marie played five matches over the two-and-a-half day event held at various venues in Bloemfontein.

Erin finished 9th, winning the Plate Section of the competition, while Lisa-Marie finished 8th.
