Cricket Festival highlights

- By SHAUN GOOSEN

With some quality cricket on display on an eventful first day of this year’s edition of the U15 Independent Schools’ Cricket Festival hosted by St Andrew’s, big things were anticipated for the second.

The 14 competing sides were to battle it out once more, with day two offering up some more mouth-watering clashes. The day’s results weren’t as close as expected however, as Kingswood College first made short work of the EP Invitational side, bowling them out for 83 (Webb leading the attack with a welltaken 7/12) and eventually winning by a landslide of nine wickets, before Bishop's saw off St Andrew’s Bloemfontein by a comfortable 86 runs.

A century by St John’s player Lion-Cachet (104) was enough to see his side to a second victory of the festival, as they downed St Charles by a whopping 145 runs, while Michaelhouse pulled off a seven-wicket victory against St David’s. The hosts, St Andrew’s College, played with vigour and passion, but were eventually slayed by a good St Stithian’s outfit, going down by 7 wickets.

One of the day’s more entertaining fixtures pitted Clifton College against St Alban’s. Going in to bat first, St Alban’s, led by a classy knock of 34 from Kikaldy, posted 183 before eventually succumbing to Clifton’s bowling attack - a brilliant 4/46 from Clifton’s Rotham doing most of the damage.

A well-taken 31 from Clift- on’s Racjoomer got them off to a solid start, before the wheels came off and a series of collapses ultimately let the side down, as they managed to muster a measly 153 allout.

Day three saw a 150 not out knock by Van der Merwe of St Charles as he helped his side beat Graeme by 144 runs.

Kingswood were unable to repeat their day two win, as they were beaten by St Alban’s by 7 wickets. Kingswood posted 104 all out as St Alban’s passed the score with three wickets down.

In their T20 fixture against St Stithian’s, Kingswood made 93 all out. St Stithian’s passed the score with 5 wickets down, to win by 5 wickets.
