Handshakes or boxing gloves required for municipality?
It is good that both the Grahamstown Business Forum and Grahamstown Residents’ Association have been revitalised and both have opted for engagement with our embattled municipality rather than an adversarial relationship.
They are urging us to become active citizens and to do our bit to improve things in our City. As much as the efforts of the GBF and GRA are commendable, it is questionable whether citizens should be expected to do what the municipality is supposed to do and for which it levies rates.
It should not be a case of engagement or confrontation but a bit of both. Previous experience has proved that a too-friendly relationship with the municipality achieves nothing.
