Riebeeck City FC take the lead in Makana LFA

- By STEPHEN PENNEY

Riebeeck City Football Club have taken over as log leaders in the Makana Local Football Association (LFA), First Division league.

Riebeeck City lead the way with 19 points after eight matches, which include six wins and a draw.

In second place is Sophia Young Stars, who were the early log leaders. They are sit- ting with 16 points after seven games, with five wins and a draw. Completing the top three is Young Destroyers with 14 points.

Sphelo Kralo is the Riebeeck City’s top goal scorer, with 16 goals so far this season.

The First Division games take place on Sunday, with matches at JD Dlepu and Fiddlers Green. This weekend includes a few matches on Saturday, but these are previously postponed games.

Riebeeck City team manager Lungisa Cakana said he is proud of the team and believes his side will go on to win the First Division, which comes with a promotion to the Makana LFA Premier Division.

However, Cakana said it has been a tough task for his side, who travel to Grahamstown every week to play matches, in both the first and second round.

Cakana thanked the team treasurer and Riebeeck East businessman Phumelele Peter, who has used his own money to transport the players to Grahamstown every week.

Cakani said he hoped that the LFA would include home and away fixtures in the league, which would mean Grahamstown teams would travel to Riebeeck East for some matches.

Makana LFA co-ordinator Akhona Heshu confirmed that both Riebeeck East and Seven Fountains travel to Grahamstown every week as “it was a decision taken by them.”

However, Heshu said that Grahamstown teams will travel from the next season.

The league continues into week eight this weekend, and Riebeeck City will be looking to stretch their lead when they play Grahamstown Academy at 1pm on Fiddlers on Sunday (19 March).

Sophia Young Stars will need to beat Young Destroyers, if they plan to take back the lead at the top of the log. They play at 10am on Sunday at JD Dlepu Stadium. Other fixtures in the Hi-Q Sports Diary on the back page.
