Wilde’s prison piece performance
Pianist Joanna Wicherek has collaborated with choreographer Athina Vahla to present the solo piano performance of Frederic Rzewski's De Profundis for speaking pianist (1994) next week.
This is the first iteration of an adaptation of Rzewski's composition based on selected texts from Oscar Wilde's famous letter De Profundis written in 1897 during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol.
In this interdisciplinary performance music, text and movement collide within measured time: the pianist reaches beyond the expressionistic style of the original composition into a more intimate and embodied role.
This exciting collaboration between the Rhodes Drama Department and St Andrew's College has been coordinated by Athina Vahla, a research associate of the Rhodes Drama Department.
The performances will be at the St Andrew's College, Drill Hall at 7pm on 29 and 31 March and 1 April.
There will be a post-show discussion on Saturday 1 April.
The age recommendation is 16-plus and the performances are 45 minutes in duration.
Ticket prices R50 (public) amd free for students and school pupils.
Pre-booking is advised due to limited seating.
