True rest and hope

“Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him. (Ps. 62:5)”

Restlessness and hopelessness seems to be the plight of so many. There seems to be a real cry for rest and hope in people's souls.

One may ask, what causes us to feel this way?

There are many contributing factors including financial problems, unemployment, marital issues, family feuds, sickness and the loss of loved ones.

Dear reader, in whom do you find rest? Where does your hope come from?

For the Psalmist, his soul finds rest in the Lord! He knows where to find true rest and where his hope comes from. Hence, the purpose of this article is to point the restless and hopeless to true rest and hope.

In the words of Augustine of Hippo, “You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

Our Lord Jesus Himself extends an invitation to the restless, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. (Matt. 11:18-29)”

Ultimately, your soul can rest in God alone, because your hope comes from Him. “Hope is called the anchor of the soul (Hebrews 6:19), because it gives stability to the Christian life. But hope is not simply a ‘ wish’ (I wish that such-and-such would take place); rather, it latches on the certainty of the promises of the future that God has made.” (R C Sproul) True rest and hope are found in Christ Jesus alone. Find it in Him through faith. Pastor Gino Nel, Bowker Street Baptist Church
