We've all perhaps heard about the recent feat by Hleze Kunju, the first Rhodes University student to write an entire PhD thesis in isiXhosa. The good man, whose thesis looks at how the local language has been kept from dying in a small diasporic community in Mbembesi, Zimbabwe, has been lionised all over, including BBC's Focus in Africa programme. Not to be outdone, 23-year old Musawenkho­si Sourambe became the youngest person to receive a PhD (in Industrial Psychology) at North West. And they said scholarshi­p is dead!
