Tough MTB weekend

- STAFF REPORTER

Jason Meaton took second place at the MySpar MTB Classic 60km Challenge which took place at Zuurbron Farm on Sunday.

The day before, Meaton was eighth in the 2017 South African National Cross Country Cup which took place at the Happy Valley Conservancy in Bloemfontein. Competing in the Elite category, Meaton came up against SA’s other top cyclists, many competing for points in the National standings. Meaton finished the six-lap course in 1 hour 46 minutes 51 seconds. The overall winner was Alan Hatherly who finished in 1:34:45.

Back in the Eastern Cape, over 550 participants were treated to a spectacular Au- tumn day of tailor-made mountain bike routes (and fun farm run) at the MySpar MTB Classic.

The venue Zuurbron Farm, allowed spectators to relax with food stalls, beer tents, jumping castles, face painting and some great MTB watching. Race founder & director, Jacques Steenkamp worked hard to ensure the entire family could spend a fun-filled morning at his farm; and judging from the comments received everyone did just that.

Apart from the fantastic vibe, the continued support and generosity of title sponsor, MYSPAR together with additional support from local Koukamma Businesses, prize money totalled over R18 000 for race winners and category winners.

The 60km challenge started in perfect weather conditions. Midway through the race Meaton and Marco Joubert got away from the other riders on the more technical part of the race route. Joubert took the King of the Mountain prime and managed to open a gap on Meaton to stay away and take the win in 2.19.26. Meaton finished second in 2:25:49.

In the women’s race Anriette Schoeman was leading the race as the riders passed the halfway mark and managed to open a gap on the other women. Schoeman took the Queen of the Mountain prime and went on to win the race in 2.51.39.
