Goldfields win RU plate final

- By LAZOLA JIKWANA

Goldfields Football Club beat Hilltop Football Club in the plate final of the Rhodes Internal League Soccer Cup last Friday.

Both teams looked to attack from the start, but it was Goldfield who drew first blood when Kgothatso Lelaha got in behind the Hilltop defence to tuck away a shot past the keeper. Hilltop went in search of an equaliser but Liam Harwood denied them on several occasions. Hilltop ended the half strongly, but poor decision making in the final third let them down as the Goldfield went into the half-time leading 1-0.

Goldfields doubled their lead in the second half when the striker lashed a ball home after a fine dummy from a corner kick. Goldfields were now ruling the roost and looked comfortable on the ball with with great team football being played. The team could afford to miss numerous chances to add to the 2-0 scoreline; before Lesedi Setlhogo added the third goal with 15 minutes to go to put the cherry on top.

Hilltop scored a consolation goal with minutes to the final whistle, much to the delight of the sparse home crowd, as the ball was nudged in a tap-in from a great pass for a more respectable 3-1 scoreline.

In the main final of the Rhodes Internal Soccer Cup Shandis beat Kings. The team’s finished 0-0 after full time and went to the penalty lottery, with Shandis winning winning 4-3 in the shoot-out.
