Parkrun marks three years

- STEPHEN PENNEY

Grahamstown parkrun celebrated its third anniversary run in style last Saturday. More than 170 participants took part in the birthday run, with runners and walkers covering the 5km course in their own time.

The event, the 157th to be exact, saw three regulars celebrating milestones. Stavie van Aardt finished his 150th parkrun, while Harry Porthen and Wendy Sweetman both finished their 100th.

Maqhawe Mmango of Rhodes took line honours, winning the local parkrun for the 23rd time, while Kendal Rose was the first woman over the line, for the 14th time. Rose also holds the local parkrun record for women, with a time of 21 minutes 43 seconds set in November last year.

The men's record is held by a visitor to Grahamstown, Roger Davies, who ran a time of 19:01 on 28 November 2015.

Saturday’s parkrun ended with participants enjoying birthday cake while a lucky draw presentation took place.

The Grahamstown parkrun takes place every Saturday at 8am from the entrance to the Botanical Gardens in Lucas Avenue.

The parkrun is free and caters for all ages and all levels of fitness. Dogs on leashes are also welcome.

To register for the parkrun visit http://www.parkrun. co.za/grahamstown, set your home run to Grahamstown (not Botanical Gardens – that is a different parkrun course in Cape Town).
