Lutho Singata

-

This week’s Hero of the Week is Rhodes University student and RU Shotokan Karate Club President, Lutho Singata. The Karateka was recently awarded a trophy for Best Senior Male Karateka at the 2017 SASKA National Championships.

Singata secured the prestigious award after winning six medals at last year’s Championship which included three gold, two silver and and a bronze medal. Capping off a great year for Singata were the gold, silver and bronze he won at the UWKSA National Championships last March. In addition, he also became the first Rhodes Karateka to win the prestigious Male Senior Kumite (fighting) event at the 2017 SECKO Karate Championships which was held at the Fish River Sun Hotel.

Beginning to study karate as a means to live out his father’s former ambitions of studying karate, Singata believes that karate is a way of life that teaches discipline, concentration and endurance. Singata believes his karate has helped his academic career at Rhodes.

He has also remained humble, despite all this success. Lutho Singata posing with his multiple awards from last year.

“It felt good because mostly it shows in my karate,” Singata said about the recent award, “although winning is not about awards but doing your best and how good you think

you have done. Awards are just symbols of the hard work you put in.”

Singata hopes karate will continue to teach him to be a better man and citizen.
