Pine decking is a more affordable solution in comparison to balau, says Etienne du Preez of BUCO.
“These planks have a similar texture to balau with grooves cut into the surface to make them non-slip; they also turn grey if left untreated. We recommend the 32 x 110mm planks for stability,” he explains.
“The pine is treated with CCA (a preservative containing copper, chromium and arsenic) and if the correct sealant is applied annually, it will easily last more than 10 years – as long as it isn’t submerged in water.”
Balau or garapa outdoor hardwoods cost about R82/running metre (19 X 90mm), whereas pine decking is about R40/running metre
(22 X 104mm); order it from a BUCO store near you.
