#1 Keep your cool

Architect Jacques Grobler was tasked with creating a home in Ballito along the KZN North Coast where indoor-outdoor living is celebrated. Besides installing floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the house, he also added an outdoor shower that ‘mirrors’ the indoor shower in the en-suite.

The courtyard he created runs along the width of this bathroom and is connected to it by means of a sliding door. This creates the sensation of being outdoors, even if you’re showering inside! It’s a welcome addition in the balmy climate of KZN.

A smooth #2 transition

In Annaline and Gerrit van den Berg’s Stellenbosch home, Cillié Malan of Slee & Co. created an effortless flow between the main bedroom en suite and the adjacent outdoor courtyard with a spa-like shower and some greenery. The white mosaic wall in the indoor shower is timeless and will prevent this bathroom from dating too quickly.

#3 View from the top

A second storey, including a main bedroom and en-suite bathroom with shower, was added to this home in Oranjezicht. The shower is reminiscent of a sauna and to bring in more natural light, a Juliet balcony was built with a sliding door that opens onto the garden and offers a view of the treetops.

#4 Green touch

We love the sunken pot with its indigenous forest bell bush ( Mackaya bella) on this outside shower deck. When placing a plant in a high-moisture environment, make sure that it can handle plenty of water on a daily basis and that there is sufficient drainage.

#5 A window to the world

When the bathroom in this old Kenilworth house was renovated, the homeowners decided on an all-white palette to accentuate the gorgeous garden view offered by the large aluminium-framed bay window right next to the freestanding bath.
