[ BRIGHTEN UP WITH BOLD COLOUR CHOICES]

-

Adding colour to your home is right on trend; Lien Potgieter, colour consultant and author of Become Color Conscious: And Transform Your Experiences, offers the following tips:

• I often find that people appreciate bright colours in other people’s homes but are too scared to use them in their own spaces. Don’t be afraid to experiment! If you love blue, start living with blues; if you love yellow, live with yellow…

• While many people might think that bright colours aren’t sophisticated and will make your home look like a preschool, you’ll be surprised at the balance it creates. Use the tried-andtested colour wheel as your guide.

• Start with a feature wall in your home and take a chance by painting it in your favourite bright colour. Live with it for a while and be mindful of how it makes you feel. Add art to the wall – most wall hangings look so much better against a bright background instead of white, grey or cream.

• Green is very popular at the moment. It’s the colour of nature and reminds us of a fresh start after hardship. It’s a lovely shade for creating balance in the home. Combine green with other earthy colours such as browns and creams, or be bold and combine it with yellow, another green or a strong blue.

• If you don’t want to paint, opt for a sofa in green, yellow, red or orange upholstery – that in itself will make a colour statement.

• If you’re still hesitant about using bright colours on your walls or large furniture pieces, start with a few scatter cushions or rugs. Enjoy the process!
