QUICK PROJECT GUIDE

Hard labour 2/10 • Skill level 2/10

Time needed 2 hours, excluding drying time 3 Optional Once we’d stuck all the pieces of tablecloth onto the tiles, the grout lines were too light for our design, so we decided to paint them in Sherif’s Stone with an artist brush. You can also do this before you start sticking the tablecloth pieces onto the tiles. Once the paint and glaze has dried, apply a topcoat of glaze over your new ‘splashback’.

We updated the shower with water-resistant vinyl printed by De Waal Art. It creates the look of a pressed ceiling and adds a soft romantic touch. It can be applied as a DIY project but to ensure the best possible result, we called in the experts to give us a hand. A similar but thicker product was used on the bathroom floor (opposite). Painting tiles inside a shower should be avoided at all costs; if you’re keen to paint the other wall tiles in a bathroom, follow our tips (right).

TIPS FOR PREPPING & PAINTING WALL TILES

• Wash the tiles thoroughly with Powafix Lacquer

Thinners; use a nailbrush to scrub the grout. Preparation is key – don’t skimp on this step!

• Let the thinners dry for 30–40 minutes, then repeat the process to remove any oils, greasy residues or dirt from the tiles. Wait another 30–40 minutes to let it dry.

• Use a 50mm Hamilton’s Ensign brush to do your cut lines and to cover the grout lines between the tiles; here you would apply a thin layer of paint). Then use a mohair roller to paint the tiles – we used Tjhoko Paint Cloud White. Work in small sections at a time, and paint a second layer once the first layer is touch-dry.

• Once the second layer of paint has dried, wait a minimum of 4 hours before you apply diluted Tjhoko Paint Clear Glaze (one part glaze to one part boiled and cooled water) with a damp microfibre cloth in a circular motion.

• Make sure the room is well-lit so you can see where the glaze has been applied.
