1 Thoroughly clean your chest of drawers with lacquer thinners and a microfibre cloth to get rid of any oil on the wood; this prevents the paint from peeling off. Wait at least an hour for the thinners to dry completely before applying the first coat of paint (Lebo’s Light); use a 110mm sponge roller as it ensures a thin, even layer. For this dresser, three coats of paint were needed to create a solid base for the blue stencil pattern you’ll apply later. 3 Stencil the outside Mix Tjhoko Paint Bob’s Blue with a little Tjhoko Paint Matt Black to create a deep Mediterranean blue. Three different 15 x 15cm stencils were used here. Secure each stencil with painter’s tape to hold it in position while you paint. Don’t use too much paint on your stencil brush, otherwise it will ‘bleed’ under the stencil. 2 Paint the inside of the drawers with John’s Joy (three coats). Also paint the sides of the drawers in this cheerful yellow. To get a perfect line where the two colours meet, apply blue painter’s tape over the off-white front before painting the sides yellow. 4 Paint the lemons Draw the outline of the lemons, twigs and leaves with a grey pencil, then colour them in with shades of yellow. Start with the darkest colour (John’s Joy) and add enough Lebo’s Light for subsequent lighter shades to give the design depth and definition. Once you’re happy with your lemons, colour in the twigs and leaves with Eye of Elsie and Frik’s Forest respectively. Allow the paint to dry completely. 5 Using your stencil brush again, finish off the front of the drawers with the lettering stencil. Wait until the chest of drawers is dry before sealing it with one coat of Tjhoko Paint Clear Glaze (diluted with one-third water) and a microfibre cloth. If you prefer a more glossy finish, you can apply up to three coats of Clear Glaze – wait about 1 hour between coats.
