Protect your paint job
Q: I have 10 Malawi chairs and I’d like to give them a fresh look with white, yellow and green paint. It’s important that they’re protected from the sun’s harsh rays; what kind of paint should I use?
Nadine Vosloo of Tjhoko Paint replies You can paint your Malawi chairs with Tjhoko Paint and Tjhoko’s Clear Glaze will protect them from the sun. Follow one of two methods:
1 Clean the chairs thoroughly with a cloth and lacquer thinners. Wear gloves and a mask and work in a well-ventilated room. Wait 20–40 minutes for the lacquer thinners to dry and then start painting with a paintbrush – I prefer a Hamilton Ensign brush.
2 The other, easier, option is to spray paint the chairs: dilute every 500ml paint with 10ml water and spray paint your chairs with a paint spray gun. (Tjhoko Paint can be diluted up to 10% with water for a spray paint application; thus, 100ml water for every litre of paint.)
Wait for the paint to dry before applying the next coat.
When you’ve finished painting, leave it to dry overnight and then apply the Clear Glaze by diluting it with 30% water (3 parts glaze to 1 part water) and rubbing it onto your chairs with a damp microfibre cloth. Wait 30 minutes, then apply a second coat of Clear Glaze.
Regular maintenance is required due to our harsh African sun; if the chairs are under cover, the paint will last longer.
Consider these colours:
White Cloud White or Da’vid; Yellow Simon Says, John’s Joy, Early or Bright; Green Goodness, Gracious, Olivia’s Pale, Dumisa’s Dream, Frik’s Forest, J’co or Laughing Lee.
