Old artworks, new look

Get creative with dated paintings!

When DIY expert Shelly Bergh updated her late mother’s bedroom in what is now a holiday rental in Plettenberg Bay (see page 50), even the paintings on the walls got a whole new look. “The old paintings aren’t valuable works of art,” explains Shelly. “But we needed something to decorate the walls, so we decided to work with what we had.”

To tie in with the colour-drenching effect in the space, she painted the lower half of each artwork the same shade as the wall, and then got creative with her paintbrush! She explains how...

The gold-coloured frames were renewed with black paint for a more contemporary look. If possible, remove the art from the frame, or mask off the painting around the inside of the frame so that it’s easier to paint. Apply two coats of paint, giving each coat 40 minutes to dry. Remove the masking tape once the second coat has dried.

NOW FOR THE ARTWORKS

1 Measure and mark about halfway up from the bottom of the painting and stick a strip of masking tape across it. Apply two coats of paint in the colour of your choice across the bottom part of the painting. Give each coat at least 40 minutes to dry. Remove the masking tape once the paint has dried. 2 Draw the Matisse-inspired leaf freehand, or download the design at news24.com/home and print it out. Enlarge or reduce the design, depending on the size of the artwork you’re revamping. Place a sheet of tracing paper between the printed leaf and the painting, then trace the design with a pen. 3 Paint the leaf design in the colours of your choice. Shelly used Tjhoko Paint in the colour July for the circle and True Blue for the leaf.
