When Francois and Ruth Roos moved onto their Hartenbos smallholding, they discovered an unsightly gaping hole in the front of the property where a trampoline had once been. It had also served as a dumping ground for building rubble.

They considered closing up the hole, but then had the bright idea to create a pool in it instead! The couple removed the rubble, laid the foundation, reinforced the sides with bricks, plastered the walls and then laminated it with fibreglass lining. Finally, they installed the piping, pump and filter themselves.

“In the summer, we spend most of our time around the pool, braaiing, reading, tanning and swimming,” says Francois.
