Tables with a twist

When Alf Tilley decided to turn a ‘dead corner’ at his Cape Town home into a sociable entertainment area complete with built-in benches and a new fire pit, he was inspired by the aesthetic contrast of metal and stone. So he created eye-catching gabions, that are both weatherproof and affordable, to complement the seating arrangement.

“The size of the gabions allowed me to use them as tables and incorporate additional detail such as a flower box, icebox and wood storage hatch,” says Alf. These additions also saved on the cost of filling the welded mesh entirely with pricey river stones.
