with the Wincklers
How would you describe your style? “It’s a little bit of everything,” says Aletté. “Not French or boere-chic. I love colour, weathered wooden furniture and a combination of old and new.” Heinz describes it as “Winckler style”. Where do you get your inspiration? “Pinterest. And Home, of course!” says Aletté. Was there any conflict, and how did you handle it? “It was definitely a challenging process, but we didn’t really argue about a lot of stuff,” says Heinz. “The advantage was that we didn’t live in the house while the renovation was in progress – we rented a place nearby.” Is there anything you regret? “No,” says Aletté, although Heinz admits that the emerald green en-suite bathroom unnerved him at first. “But from the start he trusted me with the décor decisions – that’s my field, and I love decorating.” Any advice for other renovators? “There was some damage done by the contractors who did the smaller jobs; for example, they broke roof tiles when they walked on them. And it was a new roof!” says Heinz. “If people need to work on your roof, check its condition beforehand and again afterwards so that you know if they’ve caused any damage. Otherwise, they can pass the blame from one to the other and then it becomes your problem.
“We also struggled with touch-ups that needed to be done in one area on the exterior of the house. It was exactly the same type of paint in the same colour – but it looked different once applied. It’s a mystery...”
