Where did you get your ideas? Home and Pinterest. Any other hints or tips? Always keep a stash of emergency plumbing parts in case you work after hours and things go wrong. We tried to determine where the plumbing lay by looking at where the plasterwork was uneven – but it didn’t work. The first hole we drilled perfectly, but we forgot that there was both a hot and cold water line and hit the water! The plumber was expensive... What do you enjoy most about the completed project? We spend most of our time in the kitchen and love that it’s cosy, easy to live in and practical. We also appreciate it more because we know all the work that has gone into it – it gives us courage to tackle more projects.

What’s next? We’d like to build a flat next to our house for extra income.

A striped wall, an inexpensive DIY project, creates an interesting focal feature. Décor accessories from Beach Sand; hanging plants from Woolworths and Greenstudy

The staircase (left) to the living room located opposite the kitchen also underwent a mini makeover with a beautiful new wood and tile finish.
