TThis is the third place they’ve renovated but this time round it was a special project for the Du Toits of Centurion – the house is the same one in which Rudolph grew up. “We’re very sentimental about this house,” says Liesl. “Rudolph’s parents built it 48 years ago – and what a privilege it is to be creating new memories here with our own children.” Although the kitchen was quite dated after almost half a century, the wooden cupboards were still in good nick and only needed a coat of fresh paint for an instant facelift. “But we couldn’t afford to replace the existing granite slabs, so we had to think carefully about which paint colour and tiles we selected,” says Liesl. “They had to match the brownish-grey hue of the slabs.”

The kitchen was revamped in two phases: the tiling, the moving of the top cupboards and the installation of the stove was done just before the family moved in (and while Liesl was heavily pregnant). “Then we lived without cupboard doors for almost a year as we couldn’t face doing a spray-painting project with a new baby in the house!” says Liesl with a chuckle.

We’d only been in the house for four days when Anna was born. We cut it a bit fine! – Liesl
