The original back door could easily be replaced with a large window as another door from the living area gives access to the yard.

The couple also removed the door separating the kitchen from the dining area (right).

They retained most of the lower cupboard carcasses; Duanne re-used some of the top cupboard carcasses to make additional lower cupboards and drawers for the new island. “We didn’t like the idea of having high cupboards; they can be difficult to reach and make for easy hoarding spaces!” says Esté.

Paint colours The focal wall was painted with Plascon Ocean Liner and the remainder of the walls with Plascon Light Stone to match those in the rest of the house.

“The pull-out chopping board is one of my favourite features!” says Esté. “It saves countertop space and it takes just a few seconds to push waste directly from the board through the opening at the back of the drawer and into the bin below it.” The board is removable so it can be washed.
