The old man's beard in the upside-down pots needs no water, although it prefers a spot with high humidity, such as a bathroom. It's simply suspended from a hook inside the pot; these are available from their shop. the floating shelves suspended from the ceiling with cables. gGonk in Linden, Johannesburg is so much more than just a place of work for its co-owners. Gerhardt Oosthuizen and Kosie Nagel regard this treasure chest of gorgeous décor items as a dream come true – as is their beautiful home which embodies everything that brings them joy. “When we bought this house six years ago, it had been standing empty for a year and a half,” says Gerhardt. “The grass was long and the swimming pool was green and full of frogs. The tiles had been chopped out and lay in heaps on the floor. We didn’t even get keys to the house because there was no door that could be locked!”

After months of demolishing and constructing, the pair were able to settle into their new abode Gerhardt and Kosie love spending time on their stoep, which they regard as an integral part of their home – who would've guessed the table was a picket fence in its previous life? – not that this stopped them from making changes on a regular basis. “Thanks to our store, we have access to the most amazing things. There’s always something new for us to bring home,” says Gerhardt. “I’m a member of ‘Scatter Cushion Anonymous’ – I find it difficult to walk past a pretty cushion!”

For this reason, Gerhardt and Kosie have largely opted for a neutral palette as this allows them to make décor changes without it costing an arm and a leg.

“The neutral walls and floors and natural-fibre curtains make it an accommodating palette. It doesn’t take much effort to add or remove colour with focal pieces.” >>
