Keeping it real
The weekend in Knysna brought the couple much more than a new home and a new job for Andries. Sunshine, the Labrador, came with the house as her owners could not take her with them.
It also paved the way for a new career for Jayne, who now co-owns a clothing boutique, Two on Toast, and a lifestyle store, Madam Botany, specialising in botanical art, gifts, gardening and other accessories with her close friend Gina Potgieter.
Jayne’s father Roger Naisby is an avid gardener who inspired her love of all things botanical. “Sadly, I don’t think I’ve inherited his green fingers,” Jayne says with a laugh. “But I certainly share his passion for greenery and especially like to bring the beauty of the garden indoors.
“The textures and colours of Africa are close to our hearts and have influenced the way we have styled our home. We love leather and hides, baskets, wood and canvas, warm natural colours and touches of pattern…”
Jayne admits that a baby and two dogs – they also have a Ridgeback, Hunter – can limit your décor choices. “However, Andries and I both want a house that can be lived in rather than one that is picture perfect, so we have chosen quite hardy pieces of furniture and fabrics.
“Our leather couch has been a brilliant choice when it comes to our dogs and Ben. The creases and scuff marks add to its character and, to be honest, I think the couch looks best when our Ridgeback is sprawled across it. The patterned kelim was another great choice as it doesn’t show every spill or paw print.
“We have so many glass surfaces in our home but I have admitted defeat; I know these will be covered with sticky fingerprints for the next few years.” >>
