Bridging the divide

Thank you so much for your potato latkes recipe in the June issue. With Ramadan upon us (the month when Muslims fast from just before sunrise to sunset), I’m always looking for something different to try.
It’s tradition to break one’s fast with dates and water followed by savoury snacks and soup. And when I saw the latkes recipe, I knew they’d be perfect! They were a hit. I just added a little grated cheese and served them with a sour cream, chives and jalapeño dip.
There’s hope for South Africa when a traditional dish served for Hanukkah can be served (with a little tweak) during the month of Ramadan to break our fast with friends and family. Thank you for a wonderfully practical magazine that speaks to us all. I think that regardless of race, culture or religion, we can all find inspiration in Home.
