An eclectic style

-

In Diana’s home, you’re unlikely to find anything that has been purchased recently. Instead, it’s filled with pieces she’s kept from the many homes she has lived in previously. “In fact, I can’t recall the last time I went into a store to buy a piece of furniture or décor item!” she says with a laugh. “I love the sense of familiarity and comfort that the different pieces bring and I ensure that each of my ‘old friends’ has a place in this home.”

Diana also inherited many heirlooms, including a few antique Breton pieces with beautiful ornate carvings – some of which first came to South Africa by sea with her great-grandfather in 1850. There are also a few old oak pieces from her husband’s family in Norfolk.

The placement of these treasures was carefully planned while she worked on the design of her home and everything now has its place, such as in the living area where Diana has had alcoves created in which to display her favourite books and artworks. Every piece of furniture has a purpose and there is nothing “extra” in her décor – it’s all efficient yet romantic, much like the design of her home.

“I’d have to say my style is eclectic, simply because it’s a collection of pieces I love – and they work well together because they belong together!” In the main bedroom (above), a kimono that Diana inherited from her great-great-aunt creates a lovely focal point in a recessed wall behind the bed.
