Cool as ice

-

Lily White of Johannesburg writes I love to make pet treats; do you have a recipe for something cool on hot summer days?

Sister Valdette Muller, owner of online store shingavet.co.za, replies Just like humans, our furry friends also enjoy nibbling on something cool. Here’s an easy ice lolly recipe: You will need • water • carrot, grated (this will flavour the water and give the lolly a lovely orange colour) • apple, grated • dog biscuits of your (or your pet’s) choice • water-resistant toys • chicken stock with low salt content

Method

1 Cut a hole in the lid of an empty plastic container, such as a margarine tub – make the hole just big enough so that the handle of a wooden spoon can fit through it.

2 Mix the carrot, apple, biscuits and chicken stock with just enough water to fill the plastic container.

3 Add the toys as well as the wooden spoon to the mix. Close the lid with the handle of the wooden spoon sticking through the hole. 4 Place in a freezer until completely frozen. 5 Remove the lid and stick the handle of the spoon into the grass.

6 Remove the plastic container and let the fun begin! The frozen toys together with the lolly will keep your pet busy for hours, while cooling them off at the same time.
