Parrot’s beak (Lotus berthelotii) Anja
This one is a showstopper – its dainty, grey needle-shaped leaves and exotic flowers in shades of yellow, orange and red immediately attract attention. It flowers at intervals throughout the year but is covered with blooms in spring and summer.
Plant it in well-drained, compost-rich soil about 45cm apart to ensure adequate cover of the bed. It grows well in full sun but prefers a cooler climate – in hot regions it will do better in semi-shade. Water regularly until it is well-established and thereafter only when the soil is dry. Soil that is too soggy and clogged can lead to root-rot. When it forms new shoots, break off the tips carefully; this encourages the plant to make side-shoots that will create denser growth. New plants can be grown from cuttings.
Parrot’s beak also looks great in hanging baskets and pots and is perfect for covering embankments. >> Plant guide • Full sun • Frost-sensitive • Average water needs • Height 20cm
