Décor dilemma
THE CHALLENGE
Moira Bladergroen of Kuils River reached out to Home’s personalised interior design service,
Welcome Home, to ask for help in transforming her casual living room into a more formal and sophisticated space. Her existing furniture pieces and the layout weren’t working for her and she wanted to move away from the popular farm-style trend towards a timeless, unfussy interior.
THE SOLUTION
Sam Harris of Welcome Home recommends a fresh ‘classic-meets-modern’ style with a soft and layered neutral palette. “Organic patterns, modern off-white floor tiles, a combination of fabric and leather upholstery, and touches of rich metal finishes will give Moira’s living room that ‘wow’ factor,” she says.
FURNITURE AND COLOUR The size of the room lends itself to an uncomplicated layout, allowing for an open and uncluttered space. A pair of matching sofas with elegant armchairs and a round glass coffee table will soften the finished look. An ‘organic’ feature wall fitted with striking wallpaper creates depth and interest with swirls of neutral shades.
WINDOW TREATMENTS Soft sheer curtains and contrasting block-out curtains on a double track mounted close to the ceiling creates the illusion of greater height. We recommend fitting your sheer and block-out curtains on separate tracks for versatility: the sheer curtain provides privacy during the day while still letting light in and the block-out curtain increases privacy at night, greatly reduces external noise and light, and improves insulation during winter.
LIGHTING A combination of ambient and feature lighting will ensure that the space can accommodate a variety of activities, both during the day and at night. The large chandelier above the coffee table adds visual impact as you enter the room from the double-volume entrance hall and a plush area rug in soft colours adds a luxurious finishing touch.
