• Group displays together. “I store some items and change my groupings every few months,” she says.

• Look out for beautiful scatters or fabric that can be used for cushions. Change your

cushions with the seasons. “And don’t buy all of them at the same store; keep the look interesting.”

• A stoep is a must with Jo’burg’s wonderful weather, says Cillié. “We spend a lot of time on our stoep; it’s all about socialising and enjoying delicious meals.”

• Don’t pack your prettiest things away; use them, recycle them, give them away or lend them to others.

• Upholster large pieces of furniture with durable fabric and keep more expensive fabric for smaller items.

• Floor and table lamps add atmosphere. “In my living room, there’s a ceiling light that hangs low enough to serve as a ‘floor lamp’!” >>

Bare walls are few and far between in this house. “I buy cheap frames so I can change their contents as and when the fancy takes me,” says Cillié.
