Jani AugustynGoussard of Paint & Decor replies Firstly, it’s a stroke of luck that both you and your husband like the same colour scheme! There are many ways to bring your love of olive shades into your bedroom without making the space feel dark; here are a few ideas:

WALLS & ACCESSORIES Start by painting your walls in a soft grey-green such as Leah’s Green from Paint & Decor.

Then paint your cornices and skirtings in a darker green as an accent colour; try Paint & Decor Wild Rosemary or Jonkershoek. You could also experiment with a tranquil grey palette as a neutral base; use Paint & Decor White Pepper and Raw Cement and incorporate splashes of your favourite green in fabric and furniture.

Another easy way to introduce colour is with wallpaper – and don’t forget about scatter cushions and bedside lamps!

FURNITURE & CURTAINS You can keep the walls light and use green as an accent colour in your furniture, such as on bedside cabinets or a headboard. Chalk paint is ideal for these items and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in the colour Olive will work perfectly. Use a stencil in white or the same light green as used on your walls to create interesting texture on top of the painted surface.

You can also buy inexpensive white or linen-coloured curtains and create a pretty French stripe along the bottom with chalk paint. I suggest using something like Annie Sloan Chateau Grey, which you can dilute (about 1 part water to 5 parts paint) and then apply directly onto the curtains. When you’ve finished painting, let it dry completely and then iron the back of the curtain so that the paint draws into the fabric – the heat works like a sealant and you can wash the curtains with no fuss thereafter.

CUPBOARDS If you’re allowed to revamp the cupboards, update them with a lick of chalk paint; Annie Sloan Versailles and Chateau Grey are great options for bringing in olive shades.

There’s no need to shy away from pastels, so long as you choose shades that have a touch of grey in them; these types of colours always look sophisticated.
