• Water your veggie patch at least once a week – plants have better cold tolerance in moist soil.

• Stake broad beans and Brussels sprouts. Earth up the soil around cabbages and cauliflower.

• Feed brassicas once a month with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser.

• Check for aphids, especially on brassicas, and spray with an organic insecticide.
