1 Eazyleaf ‘Ezmina’ is a red leaf cut-and-come-again Lollo lettuce type that is a tried and trusted variety in South Africa. It is a bulky plant that produces lots of leaves. Cut the outer leaves, leaving the inner ones to grow.

2 Iceberg ‘Botiola’ isafirmcri­sphead lettuce with crunchy green outer leaves that grows well throughout winter. Harvest when the head is firm.

3 ‘Tatienne’ is a very pretty red and green butterhead lettuce. As it matures, the outer edges of the leaves turn deep red. It produces a medium-sized, compact head. A good companion for ‘Tatienne’ is the green butterhead, ‘Analora’, that fills out fast and has attractive dark green leaves.

4 Romaine or cos lettuce has a tight, upright shape with crisp light inner leaves and darker green outer leaves.

‘Xanadu’ is a mini green variety, with exceptiona­lly tasty dark green, shiny leaves. It produces a yellow heart and lasts well in the refrigerat­or. ‘Moonred’ is an unusual red mini butter lettuce that is a good companion for ‘Xanadu’.
