Sedum adolphii ‘Golden Glow’
Yellow-leafed succulents are few and far between and a great performer is Sedum adolphii ‘Golden Glow’; it lives up to its name by lighting up the landscape. The yellow leaves intensify in colour in the sun and may develop red tips in winter. This is a beautiful, spreading groundcover that is an asset in any garden.
How to grow Like all succulents, ‘Golden Glow’ likes well-drained soil, on the sandy side, and at least six hours of morning sun, as hot afternoon sun could burn the leaves. Water deeply when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can cause root rot. Feed in spring and summer using fertiliser at a quarter of the original strength.
Garden uses This sedum is valued not only for its colour but as a fast-growing, low, spreading groundcover. It is useful in borders, along driveways, in-between pavers, around the pool or outdoor living area, for adding colour to rockeries and in containers.
The leaves form yellow rosettes that contrast well with red and silvery-leafed succulents. Small white star-shaped flowers may be produced in winter.
Did you know? As a container plant, ‘Golden Glow’ does best in an unglazed clay pot, because clay is porous and allows excess moisture to evaporate, reducing the risk of overwatering and root rot.
Common problems Plants need protection from heavy frost and heavy rain, especially in winter rainfall regions. If overwintered indoors, they will thrive in a warm room with bright light.
