Be eco-savvy and breathe new life into your décor with a paintbrush and Tjhoko Paint!
YOU WILL NEED
• an old hollow-core door
• old 20L metal paint tins
• 500ml Tjhoko Paint in the colour Karema • 500ml Tjhoko Paint in the colour Tinkie’s Treat • 2 x 1L Tjhoko Paint in the colour Da’vid • 250ml Tjhoko Paint Clear Glaze
• 90 x 90cm stencil, Karema&Tinkie
• 30 x 30cm stencil, code 30x30-6
• 3 small paint trays
• 225mm mohair roller
• 50mm sponge roller
• 110mm sponge roller
• lacquer thinners
• newspaper
• masking tape
• microfibre cloth
FROM OLD DOOR TO TABLE...
1 Clean the door thoroughly with lacquer thinners; allow to dry completely for at least 40 minutes.
2 Pour 500ml Da’vid into a paint tray and apply one coat with the 225mm mohair roller. Wait at least 40 minutes for it to dry (the warmer the weather, the quicker it will dry), then apply a second coat.
Tip Before using the mohair roller, rinse it with clean water to get rid of any loose fibres.
3 Wait for at least 40 minutes, then position the Karema&Tinkie stencil on the tabletop; for symmetry, start in the middle. Pour about 150ml Tinkie’s Treat into a clean paint tray, then pour 150ml Karema into another clean paint tray. Start with the colour of your choice (we started with Tinkie’s Treat) and roll the paint over the stencil with a 50mm sponge roller. Use a fairly dry roller so that the paint doesn’t seep under the stencil; keep a piece of newspaper handy to remove excess paint from the roller if need be. Repeat until you have completed one row in Tinkie’s Treat.
4 Start your next row, this time in Karema. Repeat until the entire tabletop is decorated as desired.
FROM PAINT TINS TO STOOLS...
1 Clean the paint tin thoroughly with lacquer thinners; allow to dry completely for at least 40 minutes.
2 Using a 110mm sponge roller, paint the outside of the tin with one coat of Da’vid. Wait until the first coat has dried, then apply another layer for an even finish. Allow to dry completely overnight.
3 Use masking tape to mark off two stripes on the paint tin; we painted the bottom stripe in Karema and the top stripe in Tinkie’s Treat. Apply the paint with a fairly dry 50mm sponge roller. Wait until the paint has dried before removing the masking tape.
4 Allow to dry completely overnight.
Dilute three parts Clear Glaze with 1 part cooled boiled water and apply to the painted surface with a damp microfibre cloth. The glaze will protect the stools from getting scuffed.
