Make the most of rainwater

-

Wynand Oosthuizen of Durbanville writes We’ve been using JoJo tanks to harvest rainwater for use in our garden and for flushing toilets for years. Even though the worst of the recent drought in the Western Cape seems to be over, we’d like to put the rainwater to use inside our home. Is this possible and what will the water taste like?

Sebasti Badenhorst, national marketing, logistics and sales executive for

JoJo, replies Absolutely! Three key components are required in order to utilise rainwater for full domestic supply:

PRE-FILTRATION This removes debris and improves the quality of the harvested rainwater – it also protects your pump. Our range includes a Rainhead (fitted underneath your downpipe to direct leaves and debris away from the flow of water) and a First Flush Rainwater Diverter (flushes away the initial, most contaminated rainwater and directs clean water to the tank). You can install one or both – the more options installed, the cleaner the water in your tank will be. If you only install one, the Rainhead would be the best option.

PUMP A pump is required to pump the water from your tank back into the main water supply that feeds into your house. When choosing a water pump, it’s important to consider the water source, the application, and the pressure required to ensure that the pump will meet your requirements.

Tip Use a pump cover to protect your pump from the elements and prolong its lifespan.

FILTRATION Rainwater that is used for full domestic supply needs to be filtered to potable drinking water standards.

For this, you will require a filter that can remove sediment and particulates, as well as contaminants such as bacteria and other potentially harmful contaminants that could be present in the water. Our Whole-House Filter is connected to your

main water supply line to ensure that all the water in your home is clean and filtered.

Our filters are suitable for any water source. Take into consideration that different water sources might need different solutions. Municipal water, for example, is generally fit for consumption, but this may vary based on the area in which you live. Harvested rainwater requires adequate pre-filtration and if you’re using borehole water, it’s vital to first test it to identify potential contaminants. JoJo’s filtration systems use a unique process called electro adsorption to trap and remove viruses, bacteria and various other contaminants regardless of the water source.

OriginFloe, replies As a water sommelier, I am an advocate for water. My goal is to get people to love it again!

Water is packed with minerals but ‘purified’ water is often just sourced from a municipal tap and processed to strip it down to nothing. If you want to drink tap water, or harvested rainwater, JoJo’s filtration system will remove any harmful contaminants, without changing the mineral composition (TDS, or Total Dissolved Solids, is how we measure the minerality in water). This is the most important aspect I look at as a water sommelier. The good-for-your-health minerals found in water are still able to pass through the filters, providing you with safe, delicious water with all the benefits!

With JoJo, you can use your tap water at home with confidence – and at an affordable price. The taste of water will differ, depending on where it’s sourced; no two waters are the same. If your water has a distinctive taste, even after undergoing filtration, it’s very likely that this taste comes from the source and that’s perfectly normal.
