The entrance foyer to this beach bungalow in Bakoven,

Cape Town (left) boasts steel rods built into a wooden frame to secure the glass panel adjacent to the ‘street door’. It’s located right next to a public walkway to the beach, hence the need to enclose the area. Says interior designer Lynette van Zyl of Ressource Interiors: “The steel bars don’t obstruct the view and allow natural light to stream in. The foyer is separated from the bungalow by another glass sliding door as an added layer of security, especially when the street door is open.”

?? ?? In Paul and Mona Haumann’s double-storey home in Stellenbosch, as featured in our May/June 2021 issue, the bedrooms are upstairs. When planning the staircase balustrade, a gate was incorporated into the design – here, the security gate is open, allowing access to the first floor, but when it is closed and locked, it seamlessly integrates with the balustrade, and creates a safe zone upstairs.
After spotting similar glass security doors at the Rupert Foundation’s Historic Homes in Stellenbosch, the owners of this historic home in Cape Town opted to do the same after a burglar jumped over their fence and nicked something. These glass security doors are great for letting in lots of natural light and they don’t detract from the historical building. >>
