LAYERS OF SECURITY
The best deterrent is various layers of security. Hennie Carstens of Pensec Security in the Western Cape shares his top tips for a layered approach:
1 Your boundary wall is your main line of defence. Not only is this a physical barrier but it also demarcates the boundaries of your property, so intruders know when they are on public or private land.
2 Electric fences are useful because they create a barrier that alerts you if it has been compromised. Be sure to link the fence to your alarm system to alert your armed response company. Routinely maintain shrubs and trees to clear the fence for stable functionality. 3 Motorised gate and garage Protect your gate with anti-lift brackets and install an adequate lock on the anti-theft bracket of your gate motor. If possible, install alarm contacts on all gates and garage doors.
4 Garden beams There is a wide variety of exterior sensors available, each one designed to suit its unique environment. The exterior passive infra-red beam is most popular. Another option is point-to-point active beams. It’s best to get a professional to assess the relevant area. They can then quote according to your needs and budget. It is prudent to invest in a tried-and-tested product. A reputable device will range between R2 300 and R3 800, with installation included.
5 Burglar bars and gates Physical barriers are complemented by exterior electronic warning systems. Our aim is always for the intruder to trip an early warning device, and then to be met by a physical barrier closer to the premises.
6 Inside Most alarm systems will give you the option to set a stay/sleep mode. Install a strong gate in the passage to ‘separate’ the bedrooms from the living areas.
7 Cameras and apps Most of the new innovative security solutions are artificial intelligence systems being developed for the CCTV market. CCTV cameras are slowly reducing the need for exterior beams with technologies such as Line Crossing and Intrusion Detection. CCTV is also an extremely good deterrent, as intruders are wary of footage that can identify them.
If you have an internet router at home, ask your technician to set up remote viewing so you can access the system from your mobile device. A reputable home security camera system ranges from R8 000 to R30 000. >>
