This welcoming installation covered in Muehlenbeckia axillaris vines at the entrance to Johannesdal 1207, a guesthouse and wedding venue in Stellenbosch, was inspired by a similar creation at Place Des Vosges in Paris. Dané Erwee, one of the guesthouse co-owners, plotted the design and then fastened recycled timber from an original building on the farm in position with long screws. Hidden behind the strips of wood are pieces of plastic conduit that cover the screws and act as spacers to allow the plant to creep up unhindered. “We simply painted the conduit the same colour as the wall to hide the material,” explains co-owner Chris Willemse.
