A play on light

Jackie and Danielle Uitenweerde’s front door is completely covered in vertical slats to create texture. They even covered the adjacent glass panel, creating an interesting feature that plays with the light. “We used vertical slats throughout our home, so we thought it would be a good idea to repeat this on the front door,” says Danielle.

“Jackie’s dream is to have a home in the forest, close to a waterfall,” she adds. “Right now, that’s not possible, so we had to make a plan to achieve that forest feeling.”

Jackie, co-founder of Design11, a company that laser-cuts decorative steel screens and structures, got his inspiration for the design of the steel ‘canopy’ on a forest hike; he looked up and saw the sunlight filtering through the leaves.

“He recreated a similar pattern here, which results in beautiful shadows and blends in with the other elements in our front garden,” says Danielle.
