Renette regards the two dilapidated architect cabinets that were converted into a kitchen island
(left and far left) as her best buy. Derick, a skilled woodworker, made the top from scaffolding planks.
The house (above), still shutterless and without the Georgian detail. Builder Roland Johannes and his team built and plastered the low roof over the front door, as well as the little stoep (top right).
Stones had to be removed all along the roof when the IsoBoard was installed (left); these were then chopped smaller and put back – a dusty affair. This was one of the few jobs the Oppermans left to the contractors.
