Keys to our kitchen

-

Sonette loves to repurpose furniture and when creating a new look for her kitchen, she was inspired by Home to give her key collection pride of place above the window.

“Before Pinterest and Instagram, I had a scrapbook filled with ideas I found in magazines, including a Home Fresh Ideas feature on keys that I kept for years,” she says.

“When my family moved into my parents’ farmhouse in 2006, we received a big bunch of keys. It was a blessed day for more than one reason and although only five or six of the 30-odd keys had a use, I loved them all and kept them.

“Over the years, my kids have added to the collection, which now includes one for a locker, a bunch picked up on holiday, and even an extra old VW car key that didn’t work on any lock!”

The green dresser was salvaged from a friend’s garage. It was given tender loving care and the royal paint treatment in Tjhoko Paint Olivia’s Pale – and now it houses the family’s crockery.

“I try to keep the colour of the items white to create a pretty but practical display,” explains Sonette.

The collection of square artworks around the pantry doorway (see below) was created in an online workshop held by Nadine Vosloo of Tjhoko Paint during the Covid-19 lockdown. “Four blocks turned into more and more, and now I present my own workshops from time to time – and add to the collection. I just love the extra colour!” says Sonette.
