[ EXPERT ADVICE]

-

A specific dark blue paint caught décor expert Misi Overturf’s eye back in 2016; here’s how she used it to best effect in the Du Toits’ home:

The colour on Errieda’s focal wall is deep but not harsh, says Misi. “It forms a neutral canvas and accentuates key elements; the blue makes the artworks pop and defines the architectural details. I also love the way the light affects the colour, depending on the time of day, as does the dark and shadows.

“These days, Pits Paints in Paarl mixes the colour for me, according to my own formula and using a Dulux base. I call it Dave’s Blue, after my late father.”

Misi prefers a washable matte paint. “High-gloss paint shows up every blemish on a wall. I prefer a water-based paint – it’s not as much hard work as oil paint, and it also dries quickly and cleans easily.”

The antique white on the walls on either side of the focal wall, a colour Misi also had mixed, brings a fresh feel to the space.

She explains that the colour combination works very well in Errieda’s 1970s house with its characteristic high ceiling and generous fireplace.

“Errieda is a warm and colourful person. In combination with her beautiful furniture and this striking blue, everything comes into its own,” says Misi.
