Passage pizzazz

Lize-Mari Lamprecht of Villiersdorp writes We recently moved into a farmhouse with large rooms and I’m finding it difficult to decorate the long passage. Luckily, there’s a lot of natural light, but I need ideas on how to create the ‘wow effect’.

Any suggestions?

Wouter le Roux, interior architect at Hello Charlie, replies When trying to create that ‘wow effect’ in a typically overlooked space, such as a passage, these pointers will go a long way:

Function Consider improving the functionality of the space by creating storage. While your semi-circular table is perfect for the end of a passage, other options such as a built-in or freestanding unit with drawers can be very handy for stashing items not in use daily.

Focal point The wall right at the end of the passage is perfect for creating a focal feature. There are a multitude of options, such as paint techniques and wallpaper. These are great for creating interest; have fun and be bold in your choices! Beautifully patterned wallpaper in small, unexpected spaces is always a winner!

Reflection Mirrors are perfect for reflecting light and making a small passage appear larger. When placed strategically, they also reflect different views into the passage.

Lighting Do not neglect the lighting. Both a chandelier and a table lamp can create interest and depth – especially when layered with striking wallpaper or paint.

Rugs Add texture and pattern to your floor with a runner.

Leave about 15–20cm between the runner and the wall to keep it proportional to the space.

Finishing touches Experiment with a collection of framed family snaps on the walls and a beautiful vase and other decorative ornaments on the table. A plant or two is always a good idea if there is enough natural light available for them to grow; it does wonders for softening the linear aspects that form passages.
